We have heard of disco dancing, line dancing, belly dancing, street dancing and even square dancing. But PaintDancing? What will they think of next?
As you have probably guessed, PaintDancing requires no skill, talent or training - just a desire to paint and rock 'n roll to some music at the same time. There are no age restrictions either - everyone is welcome.
PaintDancing is the brainchild of Seattle entrepreneur, abstract painter and philanthropist - Matt Jones. Matt and his friend Karen came up with the idea when they were jamming to a beat whilst painting in Matt's Seattle studio, in late 2006.
The first PaintDancing event was held that same year on New Year's Eve, where people of all ages were invited to dance and paint their hearts out. The event was such a success that Matt has been holding them regularly at his art gallery in Seattle, and is looking to organize them in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
While this sounds like a gimmicky idea to make some easy money, it is very far from that. Matt does not keep a single penny of the entrance charge from the PaintDancing parties. In fact, he even pays for the paint supplies.
All money earned from these events goes to an unusual charity called MashedPotatoes.org, which Matt founded ten years ago. The mission of this charity is to "End the Threat of Hunger Worldwide" and accordingly Matt donates millions of pounds of potatoes and other non-perishable items to food banks.
What a great and fun way to raise money for charity! Below is a video of one of the "PaintDancing" events held in Seattle.
