Hyde Park in London, was home to the hilarious Red Bull Flugtag competition yesterday. Over 80,000 people gathered to watch homemade, human powered flying machines in all shapes and forms trying to 'fly' off the 30-ft deck but mostly crashing into the freezing waters of the Serpentine River.
The first Flugtag, which means 'Flying Day' in German, was held in Austria in 1991. Since then, there have been 35 Flugtags held all over the world from Ireland to San Francisco, attracting over 300,000 visitors. As the years go by Flugtag contestants are becoming increasingly creative and competitive and yesterday's 41 entrants were no exception.
The flying machines ranged from flying fruit carts to aerodynamic toilets! Other fun entries included break-dancing nuns, a Greek mythological character whose flight never took off, a car from the movie "Ghostbusters" and Mary Poppins, umbrellas and all!
The first prize of 5,000 Sterling Pounds was awarded to the "GladWinners" team, whose creation though not as wacky, flew an impressing 57 feet before plunging into the icy waters. The current world record for the furthest flight is an impressive 195 ft set in Austria in 2000.
The next Flugtag event will be held in Tampa, Florida on July 18th, 2008. For more details on this event and to watch some fun Flugtag Videos from previous years check out: http://www.redbullflugtagusa.com/
