In June 1938, a fictional character called Superman made his debut in a comic book called Action Comics #1, changing our perception of Superheroes forever.

Created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Illustrated by Canadian artist, Joe Shuster, he was our first 'flying' superhero. 72 years later, Action Comics #1 has made history again, by becoming the first comic book to sell for $1million USD!

The comic book was sold in an auction held on Monday, February 22nd by Comic Connect, who said that the sale generated so much interest, that their website crashed!

Originally priced at 72cts, the comic book had been purchased by the seller, at a 'bargain' price of $150,000 USD, fifteen years ago. It is one of only 100 copies believed to be in existence and, one of only two that has received a grade of 8 or higher, which means that it is excellent condition, making it even more precious.

Prior to this the highest price ever paid for a comic book was $317,200 USD - Also for an Action Comics #1. However, rated a grade 6, it is not in as good a condition as this one.

Comic Connect will not reveal the name of the buyer or seller, saying only that they do not expect to see this comic book in the market for at least another 15 years. We wonder what it will cost then!

But for all you, this is yet another validation that comics are good for you! They not only make your smarter, but, could also make you rich! Be sure to check out the video below of the first Superman episode that aired in 1941.
