Friday, May 10th, started out like any other lunch period at Scotland's Bell Baxter High School cafeteria. Some 600 students were mulling around eating their midday meal when suddenly, the music began.
As the students looked around to see what was going on, they encountered a strange sight - The school's principal Phillip Black, was walking toward the center of the cafeteria with a stern look on his face. Wondering if they were in some kind of trouble, the crowd turned their full attention to him only to see their normally staid and reserved head of school beginning to jam to the 1978 hit single YMCA, by Village People.
Before long, about 40 teachers had joined in the fun and the talented faculty went on to perform to a medley of songs, which included the Macarena, Michael Jackson's Thriller and even The Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Show.
Some students joined in the fun, while others cheered on enthusiastically. At the end of the dance routine that lasted over 3 minutes, the performers were treated to a rapturous approval from all present.
Phillip Black, said that he wanted to do something special for the seniors that were departing the school and was intrigued by the idea of a flash mob dance suggested to him by a student. So, he and a crew of 40 faculty members decided to stage this surprise show for which they rehearsed every day after school. They also recruited a few other members of the staff and some students to place themselves strategically around the cafeteria, in order to get the crowd's attention when the performance began.
Judging from the response Mr. Black and his faculty are getting from the students and the thousands of people who have viewed the replay on Youtube, his gift was a great success, one that will be cherished forever. We wonder what sort of fun 'gift' he will come up with for next year's departing class.
