Here is some great news for all comic book fans. Saturday, May 2 is Free Comic Book Day. Yes, that means you can go to any participating store and walk out with a free copy of your favorite comic book. The icing on the cake? The day is celebrated by vendors all over the world!
Now in its fourteenth year, the annual event that is held on the first Saturday of May, is a collaboration between comic book publishers, retailers, and distributors. It was established in 2002 to (re)introduce comic books to readers, both young and old, and also, encourage them to visit their local comic book store. Over the years, retailers have given away over 12 million comic books and the numbers are only growing.
Though not every comic book that the store sells is free, with 50 titles to choose from, there is usually something to suit everyone's taste. This year's list includes unique comic book editions featuring Marvel's Avengers, Dr. Who, Transformers, Pokemon, as well as SpongeBob. Even if none of the free titles catch your fancy, a visit to the store might still be worth the effort. That's because vendors usually discount all comic books and other merchandise on this fun day. If you need help convincing your parents do let them know that this is part of your education, given the recent research that comic books are good for learning.
